This baseline household economy assessment is of the Thar Desert areas of district Tharparkar in Sindh province. It aimed to provide an analysis of the projected situation for 2005 following the drought in 2004. The report is a first step in the process of establishing a system for food security monitoring and early warning in the Thar Desert.
This report documents the findings of the baseline assessment of the Thar Desert, and of the projections of the food security situation for the rest of the 2004-05 marketing year. The report provides background to the district and to the methodology used, and then provides details of food security and livelihoods in the Thar Desert in the baseline year, and projections for 2005. Conclusions and recommendations are provided separately for the baseline year (addressing issues of chronic food insecurity), and for 2005 (covering acute food insecurity).
