Household Economy Approach and Cost of the Diet

A Cost of the Diet analysis in the Sava region of Madagascar (2016)

A Cost of the Diet analysis of the population of the Vanilla, Clove and Coconut Tree livelihood zone of Madagascar was conducted as part of an integrated study with a Household Economy Analysis (HEA).

The studies covered the areas around Andapa, Sambava and Antalaha. These are located in the region of Sava, on the north-east coast of Madagascar, an area best known for its vanilla production and trade.

The aim of this Cost of the Diet analysis was to assess whether it is possible for households in the vanilla, clove and coconut tree livelihood zone to meet energy and nutrient specifications using locally available foods and the cost of meeting these needs. The analysis also looked at infant and young child feeding practices in the region.

The data collection and analysis set out to answer the following questions:

  • What is the cost of a nutritionally adequate diet for typical households?
  • What nutrients have the greatest influence on the cost of a nutritious diet?
  • What local foods are inexpensive sources of essential micronutrients and could be promoted through programme interventions?
  • How affordable is a nutritious diet for a typical household in different wealth groups?
